UMW Baseball Drops Saturday Twinbill to #1 CNU

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a pair of games at #1 ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday, 19-8 and 13-6, in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 6-12 on the season.

In thee opener, the Eagles fell behind, 7-0, in the opening innings, but responded with five runs in the third. Kevin France reached on an error and moved to third on a single from Garrett Lyons, before Stephen Johnston posted an RBI single. After a single by David Lambertson loaded the bases, junior Christian Hague connected for a grand slam. In the fourth, Lyons singled and came around to score on a wild pitch to cut the margin to 7-6.

The Captains would score the next four runs in the game before UMW responded with a run in the seventh. Norman Holcomb singled and scored on a hit from senior Kevin France. The Captains scored four in the seventh and four in the eighth, before Holcomb singled and France doubled him home to close the scoring.

Lyons, Johnston, and Holcomb each had three hits for the Eagles, while Lambertson and France each had two. Hank Biggs took the loss for the Eagles.

In the second game, UMW jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the first, as Hague provided a two-run double. CNU scored four in the first, and added one in the third and three in the fourth. UMW drew closer in the fifth on Garrett Lyons' solo homer, and scored three in the eighth. Johnston walked and scored on a wild pitch before Walker Chilton added a sacrifice fly. Nick Bass added an RBI single to cap the scoring.

Seven different Eagles posted hits in the second contest, with Johnston and Lambertson scoring a pair of runs and Hague driving in two. 

The Eagles will visit Averett University on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a nonconference showdown.
