France's Five RBI Lead UMW Baseball Past Marymount, 10-6, on Wednesday

Senior catcher Kevin France had three hits and drove in five runs to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 10-6 victory over Marymount University on Wednesday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 4-8 on the season.

In an entertaining contest, Marymount jumped ahead with two runs in the first, but the Eagles tied the score with a pair in the second. Freshman left fielder Sam Freeborne singled, and sophomore shortstop Nick Bass followed with a walk, before France's double plated both runners. 

The Saints regained the lead at 3-2 in the third, but the Eagles again scored twice to gain the lead. Senior Stephen Johnston walked and scored on a double from junior Garrett Lyons. Junior Christian Hague followed with a single to score Lyons.

Marymount tied the score with a run in the fourth, but the Eagles went ahead to stay with a three-run fifth. With two out, Hague singled and went to second as Freeborne reached on an error. Bass followed with a two-run double, and France doubled to score Bass. UMW added two runs in the seventh as France provided a two-run single.

The Saints got a run back in the eighth, but the Eagles got it back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Johnston. Marymount added a run in the ninth before Johnston closed the door.

France had two doubles and a single with five RBI, and Hague had four hits to pace the Eagles' 16-hit attack.Bass, Lyons, and David Lambertson each had two hits. Senior Hank Biggs gained the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in six innings, walking two and striking out five. Cole Gabriele pitched a spotless seventh, and Johnston pitched the final two innings.

The Eagles will host a weekend set with Southern Virginia University, with game one starting at 3:00 pm on Friday.
