UMW Baseball Falls at Salisbury, 11-5, on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team fell at Salisbury University, 11-5, on Sunday afternoon in Salisbury, MD. The Eagles slip to 3-7 on the season.

The Seagulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first hitting. The Eagles responded in the top of the second inning as they brought home a run. David Lambertson reached on an error and advanced to second base. After Lambertson advanced to third base, Garrett Lyons picked up the RBI by advancing on a drop third strike. 

Salisbury added five runs in the second inning to take a 7-1 advantage. In the fourth inning, UMW picked up another run as Lambertson began a two-out rally with a single. Lyons singled to shortstop, and then Nick Bass brought home Lambertson with a ground-rule double. The Seagulls bats came alive in the fifth inning again as they brought home three more runs to go up 10-2.

UMW tried to mount a comeback in the late innings, and added a run in the seventh inning. Mikey Flosser and Sam Freeborne both reached on a walk. Norman Holcomb came up to bat to and doubled to center field to score Flosser.

The Eagles added another run in the eighth inning as Lyons tripled to left field and then Bass singled him home to cut the lead to 10-4. Salisbury added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, Tyler Ray led off with a double and Freeborne followed it up with a single. Holcomb grounded into a fielder's choice to score Ray and that capped the scoring for the game.

Ray, Lyons, and Bass all collected two hits a piece. Zack Calloway pitched two innings in relief, giving up just one earned run and struck out two batters.

The Eagles will host Bridgewater on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
