UMW Baseball Falls to Virginia Wesleyan, 7-4, on Tuesday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington baseball team fell to Virginia Wesleyan University, 7-4, on Tuesday afternoon in Norfolk, VA. The Eagles slip to 1-1 on the season.

Virginia Wesleyan struck first as they scored a run in the first, second, and third inning to take an early 3-0 lead. 

UMW then cut the lead to one, 3-2, after they brought home two runs in the fourth inning. Marcel Barrett began the rally as he reached on an error. Norman Holcomb then singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Stephen Johnston came up to bat and doubled down the left field line to bring home both runners and get the Eagles within one.

In the fifth inning, David Lambertson singled to lead off the inning and then Nick Bass singled behind him to put two runners on. Kevin France then put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Tyler Ray came up in a big spot and doubled to bring home both Bass and Lambertson to help UMW take a 4-3 advantage.

The Marlins scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead and they would hold onto that lead for the remainder of the game. 

Tyler Ray pitched five innings, giving up seven runs, and striking out six batters. Robert Cross threw two scoreless innings and Hank Biggs threw one scoreless inning. 

UMW will be back in action on Friday as they will host New Rochelle at 1 p.m.
