FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Christopher Newport junior Seth Woodard, York freshman Jack Barry and CNU head coach John Harvell claimed major awards to highlight the 2018 All-CAC Baseball Team. Woodard was named Player of the Year, Barry earned Rookie of the Year, and Harvell was selected as Coach of the Year.
Woodard, a third baseman, is the second CNU player to receive the conference's top honor as Player of the Year, joining Bill Steel (2014) in that elite club. A first-team All-CAC recipient for the first time in his career, Woodard boasts a .396 batting average with 63 RBIs, 13 home runs, 15 doubles, and 55 runs scored entering this week's NCAA Regional Tournament. He leads the CAC in RBIs, ranks second in homers, walks (32) and slugging percentage (.736), third in runs, hits (63), and on-base percentage (.517), fourth in batting average, and fifth in doubles.
Barry, a first baseman and designated hitter for the Spartans, becomes the eighth Spartan to earn CAC Rookie of the Year accolades. Barry hit .333 this season with 50 RBIs, eight home runs, 13 doubles and 24 runs scored. He posted a .432 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .590 while hitting primarily in the No. 5 spot in the order for the Spartans.
Harvell was selected by his peers as the CAC Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Captains to a share of the CAC regular season title, a 32-10 overall record and 15-3 mark in CAC play. Harvell and the Captains will compete in the NCAA Regional Tournament in North Carolina later this week.
All 10 CAC squads received at least one spot on the all-star squad, with Salisbury leading the way with seven all-conference honorees, followed by Christopher Newport (5), Frostburg State (3), York (3), Penn State Harrisburg (2), Southern Virginia (2), Wesley (2), Mary Washington (1), Marymount (1) and St. Mary's (1).
Salisbury, which captured its third straight CAC title this past weekend, secured three spots on the All-CAC first team and four on the second team. Sophomore outfielder Justin Meekinsrepeated as a first-team pick, while senior starting pitcher Connor Reeves and sophomore catcher Matt Padeway were also named first-team all-stars for SU, marking their first appearances on the All-CAC squad.
A quartet of Sea Gulls made their way onto the All-CAC second team - senior shortstop Scott Ardoin, junior third baseman Jack Barry, junior DH Jack Decker, and senior starting pitcher Austin Heenan. Barry and Ardoin were repeat all-stars among the group, with Barry earning first-team honors last spring and Ardoin second-team honors for the second year in a row.
In addition to Woodard, CNU landed four other players on the All-CAC squad. Sophomore starting pitcher Thomas Packert, the 2017 CAC Rookie of the Year, senior relief pitcher Joe Burris, and senior DH Brandon Ginch joined Woodard on the first team. Burris and Ginch were repeat first-teamers for the Captains. Senior outfielder Craig Johnson picked up second-team accolades for CNU, earning all-star honors for the first time in his career.
Frostburg State picked up a trio of all-conference awards, headlined by senior starting pitcher Greg Schneider on the first team. Schneider, who won Rookie of the Year honors back in 2015, finishes his career as a four-time all-star selection including three times on the All-CAC first team. Senior outfielder Kyle Burger and senior DH Logan Corrigan were named to the second team for the Bobcats. Burger was also a second-teamer in 2017.
York's trio of all-star selections were led by junior outfielder Grant Oberholtzer, who collected first team honors. A pair of seniors - first baseman Christian Bilan and outfielder Seth Brosius - were second-team picks for the Spartans. Brosius was also a second-teamer last spring.
Penn State Harrisburg earned a pair of spots on the All-CAC team, with sophomore outfielder Bret Williams leading the way as a first-team selection. Williams was a second-team all-star as a freshman last spring. Junior shortstop Miguel Torres claimed second team honors for the Lions.
Southern Virginia senior first baseman Cole Critchfield was named to the All-CAC first team for the Knights, while senior starting pitcher Tayler Peterson earned second team accolades.
Wesley senior Chris Seibert earned back-to-back All-CAC first team honors at shortstop, while senior starting pitcher Alex Marrs received second-team recogntion for the second straight season.
Mary Washington, Marymount, and St. Mary's each were represented by one player on the all-conference team. Marymount second baseman Conner Hall collected first team honors while Mary Washington sophomore first baseman Christian Hague and St. Mary's sophomore first baseman Jay Hammett were named to the second team.
