The University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Saturday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Frostburg State University on Saturday, winning the opener, 9-1, before falling in the second, 8-4. The Eagles move to 18-16-1 overall, and 7-9 in league play.
In the opener, the Eagles scored three runs in the first and never looked back behind the masterful pitching of junior Joe Thompson. Thompson pitched a complete game to earn the win, allowing one run on eight hits in nine inings, with one walk and five strikeouts.
UMW scored three in the first as Tyler Ray and Ramsis Ruiz singled before Christian Hague was walked to load the bases. Stephen Johnston followed with a two-run single, and Hague scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth, the Eagles added a pair of runs, as Ray and Ruiz again started the proceedings with singles, before Hague plated one run with a single, and Mark Smith followed with another RBI single to up the advantage to 5-0.
The Eagles tacked on single runs in the sixth, on a Hague sacrifice fly, and the seventh, on a David Slupek home run. UMW tacked on two more in the eighth on RBI singles from Hague and Mason Riser.
Ruiz went 4-4 with three runs scored for the Eagles, while Ray and Hague each added two hits.
In the second game, the Bobcats forged ahead with a run in the second, but the Eagles knotted the score in the fourth, as Nick Bass plated Mark Smith on a single.
Frostburg scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead, but the Eagles rallied, scoring twice in the seventh on a fielder's choice from Ruiz and a single from Hague, and once in the eighth on a double steal to tie the game at 4-4.
The Bobcats scored four in the eighth on a pair of hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch.
Bass led the Eagles with four hits, while Johnston and Ray each had two for UMW. Alex Ford took the loss in relief.
UMW will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Stevenson University for a nonconference game starting at 3 p.m.
