UMW Baseball Drops CAC Doubleheader at Salisbury on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision at Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles started with a bang, as Ramsis Ruiz and Christian Hague hit back to back home runs in the first. After holding the Sea Gulls scoreless for two frames, the Eagles saw Salisbury score one in the third, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth to take a 3-2 advantage.

The Sea Gulls scored two in the seventh before the Eagles gained one back in the eighth on a Stephen Johnston home run. Salisbury scored one back in the eighth before UMW scored twice in the ninth on a Ruiz two-run shot. The Eagles got the tying run to second base with two outs, but were unable to get the tying score.

Ruiz led the way with two home runs and a double, scoring twice and driving in three. Johnston doubled and homered, and Hague singled and homered. Joe Thompson took the loss, allowing five runs in 6.1 innings on 11 hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

 In the nightcap, the Sea Gulls outlasted the Eagles, 16-15, with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Eagles started with a run in the first on an RBI single by Mark Smith. Christian Hague added a home run in the third to give the Eagles a 2-0 cushion, before the Sea Gulls answered with three in the in the third before the Eagles exploded for seven in the fourth. Hague connected for a two-run double and Nick Bass hit a grand slam in the frame.

The Eagles posted three runs in the fifth, keyed by a two-run homer from Ruiz, before Salisbury answered with a grand slam highlighting a six-run fifth. After each team scored in the sixth, the Eagles expanded their lead to 15-10.

Salisbury scored late, with five in the eighth and one in the ninth for the victory. Hague went 4-6 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Garrett Lyons and Stephen Johnston each had three. Ruiz, Mark Smith, and Bass each had two hits.

Hague took the loss with one earned run in .2 of an inning.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Bridgewater College at 4 p.m.
