UMW Baseball Sweeps CAC Doubleheader at Wesley on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team improved to 15-8-1 on the season, and 4-2 in Capital Athletic Conference action, with a doubleheader sweep at Wesley College on Saturday in Dover, Del. The Eagles won the opener, 11-6, and then took the nightcap, 12-2.

In game one, UMW fell behind, 6-2, after two innings but continually chipped away with three in the third. After Garrett Lyons led off reaching on an error, Ramsis Ruiz followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Both runners would score as David Slupek reached on a fielder's choice that turned into a two-base error.

The Eagles went ahead to stay in the fifth, as Stephen Johnston and Kevin France singled ahead of a three-run homer from senior Mark Smith. UMW tacked on three runs in the ninth on a pair of passed balls and an RBI single from Smith.

Smith was 3-5 with two runs scored and five RBI, while France and Nicholas Bass each had three hits. Ruiz had a pair of hits and two runs scored as well.

Sophomore Robert Cross gained the win for the Eagles, pitching five scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four.

In the second game, the Eagles plated two runs in the first and never let up in a 12-2 victory. Lyons led off the game with a double, and Ruiz was hit by a pitch before Christian Hague and Smith followed with RBI singles.

After Wesley cut the defricit to 2-1, UMW answered with a five-run third, keyed by a grand slam from Bass. Hague provided an RBI single in the fourth, and Lyons' RBI triple sparked a three run rally in the eighth. Lyons lifted a sacrifice fly to cap the Eagles' scoring in the ninth. Wesley followe dwith a run in the ninth to push the score to 12-2.

Lyons doubled and tripled, scoring twice and driving in a pair, while Ruiz, Hague, and Smith all singled twice. Bass drove in four with his grand slam.

Hank Biggs improved to 2-0 on the season, pitching a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits, with four walks and eight strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit St. Mary's College in another CAC contest at 3 p.m.
