UMW Baseball Falls to #7 Christopher Newport, 4-1, on Rainy Wednesday at Dickinson Stadium

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to seventh-ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon at a rainy V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles slip to 13-8-1 overall, and 2-2 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

Christopher Newport jumped on top with a pair of runs in the second inning on a two-out double, and added another in the fourth. The Eagles saw the first two innings end on double plays, and found the scoreboard in the seventh.

Senior right fielder David Slupek led off with a double in the seventh inning, and scored on a single from sophomore Christian Hague. With runners on first and second, the Captains were able to get the lead runner on a fielder's choice, then a strikeout and lineout to escape further damage.

CNU added an unearned run in the eighth on a pair of Eagle errors to cap the scoring.

Sophomore Garrett Lyons led the Eagles with a pair of hits. Sophomore Mason Riser took the tough luck loss on the mound, pitching eight innings while allowing three earned runs on six hits, with four walks and seven strikeouts. Jonathan Truba pitched a spotless ninth.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit Wesley College for a CAC doubleheader starting at noon.
