France's Walk Off Single Lifts UMW Baseball Past Southern Va., 4-3, on Monday

Junior Kevin France provided a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the University of Mary Washington baseball team a 4-3 victory over Southern Virginia University in Capital Athletic Conference action on Monday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 13-7-1 overall, and 2-1 in league play.

The Knights reached the scoreboard in the top of the first on a two-out single, but the Eagles knotted the score in the third. Bryce Runey doubled with one out, and advanced to third on a fly ball. Ramsis Ruiz singled to plate Runey with the tying run. 

The Eagles went ahead in the fourth, as Christian Hague reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error. Garrett Lyons reached on a strikeout passed ball, moving Hague to third, and Mason Riser's groundout plated the go ahead run.

UMW scored again in the sixth, as Stephen Johnston walked, and moved to third on a single from Lyons. Riser singled to left to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage. The Knights used a pair of walks, a single, and a passed ball to tie the score in the seventh. France plated pinch hitter Mark Smith, who had singled with one out, with the game winner in the bottom of the ninth.

Joe Thompson pitched 6.2 innings for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Robert Cross gained the win in relief, allowing one hit in 2.1 innings pitched, with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Christopher Newport University at 3:30 p.m.
