UMW Baseball Ties Bridgewater, 5-5, on Thursday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team played to a 5-5 tie on Thursday afternoon against Bridgewater at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium in Fredericksburg, Va. The game was called at the end of the ninth inning due to the lack of light. The Eagles are now 11-6-1 on the season.

UMW jumped ahead early in the first inning as Ramsis Ruiz reached on an error and advanced to second base. Stephen Johnston then came up and singled to right center field to bring home Ruiz.

Bridgewater got a run back in the third inning and then scored three runs in the seventh inning to take the lead 4-1.

UMW responded as Bryce Runey led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single. Mark Smith and Ruiz both singled to load the bases for Johnston with no outs. Johnston singled home Ruiz to bring the score to 4-2. Mason Riser then reached on a fielder's choice and Kevin France singled to tie the game up at 4-4.

Bridgewater added a run in the eighth inning to regain the lead 5-4. UMW answered as they managed to score a run in the eight inning as well. Smith walked to get on base, stole second, and advanced to third base on an error by the catcher. Johnston delivered for UMW as he brought in Smith with a single to center field that evened the game, 5-5.

Both teams failed to score in the ninth inning and the umpires called the game due to the lack of light.

Ruiz scored two runs and added three hits for the Eagles. Johnston also had three hits, while driving in three runs. Christian Hague pitched 6.0 innings, giving up only one run and striking out five batters.

UMW produced 12 hits, while Bridgewater managed seven hits.
