UMW Baseball Completes Sweep of St. Joseph’s on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team completed their four game sweep of St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Sunday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. The score of the first game was 4-3, and the second game was 5-0. The Eagles improve to 9-6 on the season.

In the first game, the Eagles jumped ahead in the first inning as Ramsis Ruiz reached base on an error and then stole second base to get in scoring position. Stephen Johnston then came up and hit a double to left field that scored Ruiz.

The Bears scored three runs, on three hits, in the third inning to take the lead 3-1. UMW added a run in the fifth inning as Mark Smith singled and then Ruiz bunted him to second. Johnston delivered again with a single to center than scored Smith.

In the seventh, with the Eagles trailing 3-2, Smith led off with a triple that sailed over the center fielder's head. Ruiz tied the game up on a single to left field. After Ruiz, Johnston singled and Kevin France was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs. Christian Hague then came up to bat and drew a walk to bring in the game-winning run.

Robert Cross threw 3.0 innings and struck out six batters. Joe Thompson got the win in relief as he threw 4.0 innings, giving up zero runs and striking out eight batters. UMW recorded 10 hits in the ball game.

In the second game, both teams failed to score a run in the first three innings. The Eagles put an end to that as they scored a run in the fourth inning. Ruiz led off the inning with a triple to right center and Johnston followed him up with a single to center field that scored him.

Nick Bass led of the fifth inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tyler Ray bunted him to third base and Bass then scored on a passed ball. Mason Riser then started up another rally in the same inning as he walked. Smith then reached on a walk, and Ruiz had a bunt single to load the bases. Johnston added another RBI as he grounded out to second base and put UMW up 3-0.

UMW didn't stop there as they tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning. Bass and Ray both got on base with walks, and then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Riser tripled to right center and that brought both of them home to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.

Jonathan Truba and Bryant White combined to pitch a shutout in the second games. Truba finished the game with three strikeouts and White finished with two. Johnston finished the day with four RBI's. The Eagles collected six hits in the second game.

UMW will be back in action on Monday as they host a doubleheader against Southern Vermont with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
