The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on Friday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles won the first game 19-5, and then won the second 15-0. The Eagles improve to 7-6 on the season.
In the first game, the Bears got out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Eagles responded with five of their own in the same inning. Ramsis Ruiz reached on a single and then France singled to put runners on first and second.
After Christian Hague walked to load the bases, David Slupek put down a bunt and two runners scored on an error by the pitcher. Tyler Ray then singled to bring home Hague and Slupek. Bryce Runey followed that up with another single and that knotted the score up at 5-5.
In the third inning, Tyler Ray singled to left to lead off. After he reached second base on a balk, Michael Flosser singled him home to put UMW up 6-5.
The fourth inning was a big one that broke the game open as the Eagles scored 13 runs. Mark Smith led off the inning with a single and then Ruiz walked. Kevin France singled to left field and he brought home Smith. Hague then came up and hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Ruiz.
After Slupek and Ray reached base on HBP and walk, Runey singled to bring home Slupek and France. Smith then came up with the bases loaded and drilled a grand slam to left field. The Eagles weren't done yet as they started another rally.
Ruiz singled, France reached on an error, and Hague walked to load the bases again. Slupek hit a one-hopper to the fence that scored two runs. Ray and Runey both singled after that to bring home two more runs and put UMW up 19-5.
Cole Gabrielle started the game and after the first inning, he settled down and didn't allow any more runs while striking out five batters to get the win. Alex Shapiro pitched in relief and recorded 3.0 innings while striking out four batters.
Smith and Runey finished the game with four RBI's, and Slupek added three.
In the second game, Hague dazzled on the mound as he threw a complete game and gave up one hit, while striking out 14 batters.
The Eagles got five runs across in the first inning as they loaded the bases and Slupek delivered with a double to center field to score two. Nick Bass then singled to bring another run home and put the Eagles up 3-0. Ray hit a sacrifice fly and then Runey doubled down the line to score two more runs for UMW.
UMW tacked on five more runs in the second inning as Smith led off with a single and then scored as Ruiz reached on an error. Bass got another RBI as he singled home Ruiz. Runey came up with the bases loaded and reached on an error to score Hague. Bass came home on a past ball and then Smith walked with the bases loaded to bring home their tenth run of the game.
In the third inning, Hague singled to shortstop and then Bass tripled to deep left center to bring home Hague as the Eagles extended their lead to 11-0.
After not scoring in the fourth and fifth innings, the Eagles scored four runs in the sixth. Jordan Allen singled to center to lead off and then Runey singled. Mason Riser reached first base on an error that ended up scoring Allen. Ruiz reached on a fielder's choice to add another run. Hague helped himself out with a single and Bass walked as they both brought home a run a piece. That closed out the scoring as the Eagles won 15-0.
Bass finished with four RBI's in the game, while Ruiz and Slupek both added two RBI's a piece.
UMW will be back in action on Sunday as they play St. Joseph's of Brooklyn in another doubleheader that will start at 1 p.m.
