UMW Baseball Roars Back for 9-8 Win Over Case Western Reserve on Sunday

The University of Mary Washingotn baseball team jumped out to an early lead, saw Case Western Reserve pull ahead late, and then came from behind to top the Spartans, 9-8, on Sunday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 8-4 on the season.

After Case started the game with a pair of runs on a walk, a single, and a double, UMW answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Brian Burns hit a one out double, and Stephen Johnston followed with a home run to right center.

The Eagles forged ahead with three in the second. Ramsis Ruiz singled and stole second, and scored on a hit from Reed Farrier. Garrett Lyons walked, and Thomas Weaver followed with a two-run double to put the Eagles ahead, 5-2.

Case added a run in the third, and then a solo run in the sixth, to trim the deficit to 5-4. The Eagles answered with a run in the sixth as pinch runner Zavier Webb scored on a Cody Beacorn sacrifice fly.

UMW added another run in the seventh, as Brian Burns walked, stole second, and scored on a Ramsis Ruiz single. Case pulled ahead with a four-run eighth on four hits and an error to take an 8-7 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Johnston walked and Riley West and Tyler Truslow followed with bunt singles to load the bases. Ruiz singled home the tying run, and Beacorn walked with the bases loaded to end the game.

Ruiz had three hits to lead UMW, while Burns singled and doubled. Bryant White gained the win in relief, allowing one hit in 1.1 innings, walking none and striking out two.

The Eagles will visit Penn State Harrisburg for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader on Monday at noon.
