UMW Baseball Falls to #2 Shenandoah, 5-1, on Thursday Afternoon in Nonconference Action

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to visiting Shenandoah University on Thursday at Dickinson Stadium, to fall to 7-4 on the season.

In a quality pitcher's duel, both teams were held off the scoreboard through four innings. The Hornets scored one in the fifth after a hit by pitch, a walk, and a single. The game remained at 1-0 until the eighth inning.

The Hornets scored twice in the eighth on a single, double, and single. Right fielder Brian Burns saved a run with an assist to the plate for the second time in as many days. Shenandoah added two unearned runs in the ninth to lead, 5-0.

Junior David Slupek got a run back for the Eagles in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run. In addition to his blast, Riley West had a pair of hits for the Eagles.

Sophomore Jonathan Truba took the hard luck loss, allowing one run on two hits in 4.1 innings, with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Penn State Harrisburg for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader.
