UMW Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Penn State Altoona, 9-2 and 11-3

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a doubleheader from Penn State Altoona on Friday at Dickinson Stadium to improve to 3-2 on the season. Game scores were 9-2 and 11-3.

In the opener, UMW jumped ahead with two runs in the first. Brian Burns reached on an error and advanced to second. He would score on an RBI single from Stephen Johnston. Kyle Bynum and Christian Hague followed with singles to load the bases, and Johnston scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Truslow.

The Lions tied the score with two runs in the second, but UMW went ahead for good with a four run fifth. Bryce Runey reached on a two-out error, and Robert Cross followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on an error, and Runey scored on a wild pitch. After another wild pitch put runners ons econd and third, Thomas Weaver was intentionally walked to load the bases. Burns walked to score one run, and Johnston followed with a two-run single.

The Eagles added three runs in the sixth. David Slupek walked to lead off the inning, and pinch runner Ramsis Ruiz advanced to third on a single from Truslow. Runey followed with a two-run single, and scored following a wild pitch and an error.

Johnston had two hits, two walks, and three RBI. Runey had two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Sophomore Jonathan Truba gained the win with a scoreless fifth inning in relief of Cole Jarvis, who allowed two runs on four hits in four innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts. Paul McClure pitched two scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

In the second game, the Lions pushed across a run in the first, before UMW tied the score in the second. Hague singled and moved to second on a walk. Cross delivered an RBI single to center field.

UMW went ahead with a pair of runs in the third. Burns walked and stole second, before Johnston knocked him home with a double. Bynum followed with an RBI single. Altoona scored twice in the fourth to tie the score, but the Eagles responded with four in the bottom of the fourth.

Cross and Garrett Lyons each walked and advanced on a sacrifice from Burns. After Johnston was walked intentionally, Bynum singled to third base to plate one run, and Slupek cleared the bases with a single followed by an error.

UMW scored three more runs in the fifth, as Lyons and Weaver each doubled, and Burns reached on another error. Johnston followed with another double to plate Burns. UMW capped the scoring in the sixth as Ruiz tripled and scored on a single from Truslow.

Johnston had a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI, while Bynum and Truslow each added a pair of hits. Burns and Lyons each scored twice.

Senior Nick McIntyre gained the win, allowing two earned runs in 5.2 innings on eight hits, with no walks and nine strikeouts. McClure allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts.

The Eagles will face City College of New York for a weekend series, with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 1 pm, and a single game on Sunday at 1.
