UMW Baseball Falls to DeSales, 8-4, in North Carolina on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team overcame an early deficit, but DeSales University plated five runs in the eighth to top the Eagles, 8-4, on Sunday at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. The Eagles fall to 1-2 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring with a run in the third inning. After Robert Cross walked, Garrett Lyons followed with a bunt single. Brian Burns added a bunt single to load the bases, and Stephen Johnston followed by getting hit by a pitch to plate a run.

DeSales scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to take a 3-1 lead, but UMW answered back with three runs in the seventh. With one out, Burns singled and Johnston walked. Both runners advanced on a failed pickoff attempt, and both scored on an outfield error. Christian Hague would score on a David Slupek single.

DeSales used four hits and a pair of walks in regaining the lead for good in the eighth. UMW was able to get a pair of runners on in the ninth, but would pull no closer.

Thomas Weaver and Lyons each had a pair of hits and a walk, while Burns and Kyle Bynum each added two hits.

Starting pitcher Hank Biggs allowed three earned runs in 5.1 innings on six hits, walking two and striking out five. Paul McClure took the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits in 2.0 innings, with one walk and no strikouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they host Penn State-Altoona for a noon doubleheader.
