UMW Baseball Splits Twinbill with York; Riser Wins 600th Game, Keller Hits for Cycle and Breaks Season HR Mark

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader with York College of Pa., winning the opener, 21-9, for head coach Wayne Riser's 600th career win, and senior James Keller hit for the cycle. In the nightcap, the Eagles fell, 5-3, but not before Keller broke the UMW season home run record with his 11th of the year.

In the opener, UMW jumped ahead early, scoring six runs in the first. Brian Burns was hit by a pitch and stole second, before scoring on a Mitch Moynihan single. Keller doubled home Moynihan, and scored on a Kyle Bynum single.

Stephen Johnston followed with a double to push the lead to 3-0. James Sink and David Slupek followed with RBI singles before Ramsis Ruiz produced an RBI groundout to plate Sink.

The Eagles scored twice in the third, as Keller singled, and moved to third on an error. Slupek provided a two-run single to score both runners.

UMW added four runs in the fourth, as Weaver singled and Burns walked, setting up Moynihan, who tripled home two. Keller followed with a two-run homer to push the lead to 12-0. York answered with three in the fifth, but the Eagles added one in the bottom of the inning, as Burns doubled and Moynihan tripled, for his school-record tying second three bagger of the game. 

York answered with a run in the sixth, but the Eagles added seven in their half. Stephen Johnston and Sink singled before Slupek tripled. Ruiz followed with a sacrifice fly, and Weaver reached on a hit. Burns was walked before Moynihan was hit by a pitch. Keller was hit by a pitch to plate a run, and Johnston provided a walk to score another. Sink added a two-run single to cap the inning scoring.

York added a run in the seventh and three in the eighth, before Keller tripled with one out to complete the cycle. He came in to score on a Bynum single. York capped the scoring with a run in the ninth.

Keller was 4-4 with four runs driven in and five scored, with a walk and hit by pitch. Mopynihan singled and tripled twice with four RBI and three runs, and Slupek added two singles, a triple, and five RBI. Sink and Johnston had three hits apiece, with five runs and five RBI combined.

Senior Ryan Van Assche took the win, allowing four runs in six innings, with one walk and three strikeouts.

In game two, York scored two in the third, before the Eagles answered with one in their half oif the frame. Burns walked and came around to score on an error.

York scored three in the fifth before the Eagles scored runs in the seventh and eighth. Slupek tripled to open the seventh and scored on a Ruiz groundout. Weaver tripled for his second of the game, which tied the school game record, as Moynihan had in game one.

Keller homered in the eighth to break the school record set last year by Jono Haught, with his 11th long ball of the season.

Weaver tripled twice and singled for UMW, who closes the season with a 24-15 record.
