UMW Baseball Tops St. Mary's, 9-4, in Wednesday CAC Action at Dickinson Stadium

Junior Erik Jorgensen struck out 11 batters in six two-hit innings to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 9-4 win over St. Mary's College on Wednesday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 21-11 on the season, and 5-8 in CAC play.

The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the second inning to grab an early advantage. Senior catcher James Keller singled and advanced to second on a walk from Kyle Bynum. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Keller scored on a single from James Sink, and Bynum then scored on a single from David Slupek.

UMW added four runs in the fifth inning. Brian Burns walked and advanced to third on a single from Mitch Moynihan, who promptly stole second base. Keller followed with a single to plate Burns, and Bynum singled to score Moynihan. Stephen Johnston drove in Keller and Bynum with a single.

After the Seahawks scored twice in the sixth, the Eagles scored three times in the seventh. Burns walked and advanced to second on another Moynihan single. Bynum provided an RBI double, and Keller scored on a wild pitch before a Slupek RBI single provided run number nine.

Slupek singled three times and drove in two for the Eagles, while Moynihan, Keller and Bynum each had two hits.

Jorgensen gained the win, allowing two unearned runs in six innings on two hits, with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Bridgewater College at 4:00 p.m.
