UMW Baseball Tops Apprentice, 7-5, on Tuesday Afternoon

Brian Burns and James Keller hit home runs to propel the University of Mary Washington baseball team toa 7-5 victory over Newport News Apprentice School on Tuesday at Dickinson Stadium. With the win, the Eagles improve to 18-9 on the season.

In the bottom of the first, left fielder Mitch Moynihan walked with two outs, and Keller followed with his fifth homer of the season to left field. The Eagles folloowed with four runs in the second. David Slupek walked and scored on a double from Stephen Johnston. He and Thomas Weaver, who walked, scored on Burns' first home run of the season.

The Builders scored once in the third and three in the fourth, and both teams were held in check until the eighth. The Builders closed the gap to 6-5, before UMW scored in the bottom of the frame, when James Sink hit a double and came around to score when Johnston's deep fly ball to left was caught and the relay throw was misplayed.

Freshman Jonathan Truba was credited with the win on the staff day that saw five Eagle pitchers. He scattered six hits in four innings, allowing one earned run while walking none and striking out six. Freshman hank Biggs gained the save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.

Of the Eagles' six hits, four went for extra bases, with Keller and Burns hitting home runs, and Sink and Johnston adding doubles. Moynihan and Ramsis Ruiz had singles.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Christoipher Newport University at 3:00 p.m. in Capital Athletic Conference action.
