#18 UMW Baseball Splits With Penn State-Harrisburg in CAC Twinbill on Saturday

The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg,winning 8-0 in the opener and falling 6-5 in 11 innings, in Capital Athletic Conference action in Harrisburg. The Eagles improve to 17-9 on the season, and 2-7 in CAC action.

In the opener, the Eagles jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Mitch Moynihan reached on a fielder's choice, and James Keller followed with an RBI double. Kyle Bynum then plated Keller on an RBI double.

Bynum reached on an error to score Keller in the third inning to raise the lead to 3-0, and Ramsis Ruiz singled, stole second, and scored on a Thomas Weaver single in the fifth to grow the lead to 4-0.

In the sixth, Brian Burns singled and Weaver walked, with Burns scoring on an error and Weaver scoring on a single from Keller. In the seventh, Cody Beacorn scored on a passed ball, and in the ninth Beacorn scored on a Ruiz RBI single.

Keller had a single and double and Ruiz a pair of singles for UMW, while Bynum and Beacorn each added a double. Senior Ryan Van Assche allowed four hits in seven innings with no runs allowed, walking one and striking out seven in seven innings in gaining the win. Paul McClure struck out five in two innings of relief.

In the second game, UMW fell behind, 3-0, through four innings, and battled back late to take the lead before falling in extra innings. The Eagles scored four times in the eighth, as Weaver reached on a strikeout and advanced on a passed ball. He moved to third on a single from Brian Burns, and scored on a single from Mitch Moynihan.

Bynum followed with a two-run double to score Burns and Moynihan to put the Eagles ahead. UMW added a run in the ninth as Weaver reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Moynihan single.

Harrisburg scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run homer to tie the score at 5-5 and send the game to extra innings. The Lions scored an unearned run in the 11th to take the win.

Bynum led the Eagles with four hits and two RBI, while Moynihan added two hits and two RBI. Freshman Hank Biggs took the loss allowing one unearned run in 1.2 innings of relief.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Newport News Apprentice School at 3:00 p.m.
