#17 UMW Baseball Tops Bard, 7-5, on Monday Afternoon

The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team overcame a 5-1 deficit to defeat Bard College, 7-5, on Monday at Diickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 16-7 on the season.

The Raptors jumped ahead with a three-run homer in the first, but UMW scored once in the bottom of the inning. Thomas Weaver led off with a double, movd to third on a sacrifice, and scored on a groundout from Mitch Moynihan.

Bard scored twice in the second to up its lead to 5-1. The Eagles scored one in the second, as David Slupek singled, advanced on a sacrifice, and scored on a Stephen Johnston single.

UMW scored three in the fourth to tie the score. Slupek led off with a singe, moved to second on a bunt, and scored on Johnston's double. Johnston scored on a Ruiz single, and Ruiz stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Weaver followed with an RBI single.

UMW took the lead with two runs in the sixth. Cody Beacorn led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Johnston followed with another RBI double, and he scored on a Weaver single.

The Eagle bulllpen turned in a solid day, allowing just one hit after the second inning. Freshman Jonathan Truba got the win, allowing no hits and no walks in four innings, with four strikeouts. Junior Erik Jorgensen gained his second save with a one-hit ninth.

Johnston drove in three and scored two with a single and two doubles, while Weaver drove in two with a double and two singles. Slupek singled twice.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference action at 3:00 p.m.
