#17 UMW Baseball Splits with Wesley in CAC Twinbill on Saturday

The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Wesley College in Dover, Delaware in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles dropped the opener, 10-9, before taking the nightcap, 8-4.

In the first game, Wesley scored three runs in the third and two in the fourth to gain the lead, but the Eagles answered with two in the top of the fifth. Stephen Johnston and Ramsis Ruiz singled to open the inning, and both scored on a Thomas Weaver double.

Wesley scored once in the fifth and once in the sixth before UMW scored two in the seventh, as Johnston doubled and Weaver connected for a two-run homer. The Wolverines scored a pair in the eighth before UMW erupted for five runs in the ninth. Johnston led off with a home run, and Ruiz and James Sink singled before James Keller hit a three-run homer to trim the deficit to 10-9. Wesley retired the next two hitters for the narrow escape.

Johnston led UMW with a single, double, and home run, while Weaver doubled, homered, and drove in four runs. Keller singled and homered, and Kyle Bynum and Ruiz each had two hits.

In the second game, the Eagles bats rapped out 13 hits, and senior Bernie Mayflower threw six scoreless innings out of the bullpen to lead the Eagles to an 8-4 win.

Weaver doubled to lead off the game, and scored on a groundout to give the Eagles the lead, but Wesley scored twice in the first. David Slupek homered to tie the game in the second, and Sink doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly to give UMW a 3-2 lead.

After Wesley regained the lead with two runs in the third, the Eagles countered with three in the fourth. Slupek doubled and advanced to third on an error before Johnston plated him with a single. Ruiz scored Cody Beacorn before Sink provided an RBI single.

The Eagles tacked on a run in the fifth as Bynum homered to center field, and added another in the seventh as Bynum doubled and scored on an error.

Sink and Slupek each had three hits for the Eagles, while Weaver and Bynum each added two. Mayflower gained the win, allowing three hits in six innings, walking none and striking out one.

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when they host Bard College at 3:00 p.m.
