#17 UMW Baseball Raps Out 13 Hits to Top #8 Shenandoah, 9-5, on Tuesday Afternoon

The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team rapped out 13 hits en route to a 9-5 victory at eighth-ranked Shenandoah University on Tuesday in Winchester, Va. The Eagles improve to 14-5 on the season.

The Eagles jumped on top with a pair of runs in the first inning. Thomas Weaver walked to lead off, and scored on a Mitch Moynihan triple. Moynihan came in to score on a James Keller groundout. In the second, David Slupek doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a sacrifice, and scored on a Cody Beacorn single.

UMW upped the lead to 5-0 in the fifth with two more runs. Kyle Bynum singled and Weaver and Sink reached on errors to fill the bases. After Bynum scored on another error, Keller lined out to plate another run with a sacrifice fly.

The Hornets answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but UMW scored three times in the sixth. Tyler Truslow singled, Beacorn doubled, and Bynum tripled, and came home to score when Sink's bunt was misplayed.

In the eighth, Moynihan walked, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a Keller single. Shenandoah scored three times in the eighth, but could pull no closer.

Moynihan led the Eagles with a triple and two singles, while Bynum singled and tripled and Slupek and Beacorn each singled and doubled.

Senior Tyler Daig gained the win, allowing one hit in three innings of relief of Joe Thompson, who scattered three hits in four innings.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host #15 Christopher Newport University at 3:00 p.m.
