Ellis' Walkoff Hit Lifts #18 UMW Baseball Past Catholic in 10 Innings, 7-6

Junior catcher Nykolai Ellis provided a bases-loaded single with no outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to propel the 18th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Catholic University on Sunday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 13-1 on the season.

The Eagles jumped ahead with three runs in the first. With two out and no one on base, Mitch Moynihan reached on an error and moved to second on a single from David Slupek. James Sink reached on an error to plate Moynihan, while Slupek moved to third. Ellis provided a two-run single to push the Eagle lead to 3-0.

The score remained the same until the fifth inning, when Catholic opened the inning with a pair of hits and a hit by pitch to load the bases. After a pitching change, CUA scored on a walk. Another pitching change saw an RBI single and another run coming in on an error before a nifty 5-3 double play from Thomas Weaver and a groundout got the Eagles out of the inning.

UMW bounced right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-3 lead. Kyle Bynum got hit by a pitch to lead off, and went to third on a James Keller double. Moynihan followed with a two-run single to put the Eagles back on top.

UMW added a run in the seventh with a David Slupek RBI single, but Catholic scored one in the eighth with an unearned run after an error and RBI single. The Cardinals tied the score at 6-6 with a hit batsman, single, and double in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings. Junior Erik Jorgensen got a groundout and fly ball to end the CUA threat.

In the bottom of the 10th, Moynihan reached on an error and moved to second on a single from Slupek. After Sink was walked intentionally, Ellis came through with a single to right to end the game.

Slupek led UMW with four hits in five at bats, while Ellis had a pair of singles and three RBI. Keller doubled and singled for UMW. Jorgensen gained the win, allowing no hits and no walks with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when they visit Virginia Wesleyan College at 3:00 p.m.
