Bats Erupt, Pitchers Shine in 12-1 Win Over Penn College for #18 UMW Baseball

The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted for 12 runs and 15 hits, and five pitchers combined to not allow an earned run in a 12-1 win over Penn College on Saturday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Eagles improve to 12-1 on the season.

After Penn College scored an unearned run in the second, the Eagles immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Five straight batters reached base to open the frame as three runs crossed the plate, with Thomas Weaver providing a two-run single.

The Eagles added two runs in the fourth, Weaver drove in Tim Perry with a single, and another run scored on a double play. UMW added two more in the fifth, as Mitch Moynihan singled and scored on a single from James Sink. Perry singled to plate Sink, as the Eagle lead grew to 7-1.

In the sixth, the Eagles rapped out three hits to go with a pair of walks, a hit batsman, and an error in scoring five times. Perry and Kyle Bynum provided RBIs in the run.

Perry went 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Weaver went 3-4 with one run and three RBI. Beacorn, Moynihan, and Bynum each had two hits.

Senior Wes Gholson gained the win, allowing four hits in five innings, and one unearned run, walking four and striking out eight. Tyler Daig, Dave Ludwikowski, Hank Biggs, and Jonathan Truba each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they host Catholic University at 2:00 p.m.
