#18 UMW Baseball Tops Johnson & Wales, 6-2, in Myrtle Beach to Improve to 9-0

The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team jumped ahead early and held on for a 6-2 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Eagles improve to 9-0 to start the season.

The Eagles scored three in the first, as David Slupek provided a two-run double and scored on a Stephen Johnston RBI single. Johnson & Wales answered with a pair of unearned runs in the second to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Eagles added a solo run in the second on an error, one on a Johnston sacrifice fly in the third, and on a Thomas Weaver double in the fifth.

UMW was led at the plate by Mitch Moynihan, who went 3-3 with two runs scored, while Burns and Weaver each had a pair of hits.

Senior Wes Gholson gained his second win in as many starts, allowing four hits in 3.2 innings on a staff day, with one walk and two strikeouts. Five Eagle relievers combined to allow four hits in 5.1 innings, with three walks and six strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they face Catholic University at noon.
