#29 UMW Baseball Tops Bridgewater, 3-2, with Rally in Bottom of Ninth

The 29th ranked University of Mary Washingotn baseball team scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning in edging Bridgewater College, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. UMW improves to 5-0 on the season.

In a pitcher's duel, Bridgewater's Ryan Leake matched UMW All-American Ryan Van Assche zero for zero through five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, UMW jumped ahead with a pair of runs. Senior left fielder Mitch Moynihan led off with a single, and moved to second on a single from sophomore first baseman David Slupek.

After a strikeout and a walk to load the bases with one out, Bridgewater made a pitching change. Junior catcher Jose Moreno followed with an RBI groundout, and junior right fielder Brian Burns provided an RBI single to plate Slupek.

In the top of the seventh, Bridgewater got a run back on a hit and pair of UMW errors. BC tied the score in the eighth, with a single, error, and sacrifice fly.

The visitors had the go ahead runner at second with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Burns threw a strike to home after a single to keep the score tied at 2-2. In the bottom of the ninth, Burns led off with a walk and stole second base. Junior third baseman Thomas Weaver followed with a two-strike single to right center to plate Burns with the winning run.

Moynihan led the Eagles with three hits, while Burns had a single, run scored, and RBI, and Weaver produced the game-winning hit and RBI.

Van Assche threw a complete game, striking out 11 and walking none, allowing six hits in nine innings and two unearned runs. Bridgewater's Steven Woerner absorbed the loss in relief, allowing a hit and walk in one-plus innings of work.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they host Messiah College for a noon doubleheader.
