#29 UMW Baseball Sweeps Penn State-Altoona in Saturday Twinbill

The 29th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team completed the doubleheader sweep over Penn State-Altoona on Saturday to improve to 4-0 on the young season. Scores were 18-1 and 12-2.

In the first game, the Eagles took an early lead, scoring six runs in the first. David Slupek singled, scoring James Keller. After James Sink walked, Stephen Johnston drilled a three run homer to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, Keller singled, scoring teammates Tyler Truslow and Cody Beacorn.

In the second, the bases were loaded when Beacorn was hit, scoring Moynihan to take a 7-0 lead. An error from Penn State-Altoona scored Johnston and Sink. The Eagles added another in the third after David Slupek drove in Tim Perry.

UMW stayed hot at the plate, scoring five more runs in the fifth. Thomas Weaver reached on a fielder's choice and Ramsis Ruiz scored. With the bases loaded, Penn State-Altoona walked two batters, scoring Johnston and Weaver. Slupek drove in two more to cap the scoring in the fifth.

In the sixth, Jose Moreno drove in Johnston, upping the lead to 16-0. James Keller drove in another run, and Justin Pitts scored on a failed double-play attempt by the Lions. The Lions scored their lone run in the seventh inning.

Keller had three hits, driving in four and scoring two. Slupek also had three hits, driving in four and scoring one. Johnston and Weaver each had three RBI.

Ryan Van Assche gave up only three hits in six innings in the start, walking three and striking out six. Freshman Hank Biggs closed the game, striking out one.

In the second game, Slupek scored on a fielder's choice in the second inning to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Keller scored on an error and Moynihan singled to score Beacorn.

In the fifth, the Lions scored two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. The Eagles responded with seven runs of their own. Slupek doubled to score Moynihan, then Sink doubled to score Slupek. Johnston singled and advanced to second on an error and Sink scored. Johnston scored on a Jose Moreno sacrifice fly, then Brian Burns scored after a Thomas Weaver double. Keller singled to score Weaver, and was driven in by Moynihan. The Eagles closed the inning up 10-2. In the sixth, Truslow drove in one and scored on a passed ball.

Moynihan had three hits, driving in two and scoring one. Slupek had three doubles, driving in one, and scoring two.

Junior Nick McIntyre pitched five innings, walking one and striking out seven. Junior Erik Jorgensen closed the game, walking none and striking out three.

The Eagles are back in action on Sunday at 1:00 pm as they host Penn State-Abington.
