#24 UMW Baseball Uses Four-Run Second to Top #4 Salisbury, 5-4, in CAC Tourney

The 24th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team scored once in the first and four times in the second, and held on for a 5-4 victory over fourth-ranked Salisbury University in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday in Frostburg, Md. The Eagles improve to 27-5 on the season, and extend their win streak to 14 straight games.

The Eagles got on the board with a run in the first, as junior shortstop Justin Kime singled, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on a Mitch Moynihan RBI single.

Mary Washington added to its lead in the second, scoring four runs. Thomas Weaver singled, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brian Burns then reached on a throwing error, moving Weaver to third. With one out, James Keller doubled to left center to score both runners.

After Kime reached on an error, Jono Haught was walked, and Moynihan came through again with a two-run single.

Salisbury cracked the scoring column in the fourth with a pair of runs on one hit, and followed with two more in the fifth, but from there both pitchers beared down, with neither team scoring after the fifth.

Moynihan led the Eagle offense with three hits and three RBI, while Keller singled and doubled, and Kime singled twice.

Junior Ryan Van Assche gained the win, his 10th of the season against just one loss, throwing 8.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and six walks allowed. Junior Tyler Daig gained the save, getting a groundout and a strikeout with two on in the ninth, in improving his school season record with his sixth save of the year.

The Eagles will face Frostburg State University on Saturday at 9:00 a.m., with the winner of that contest advancing to Sunday's final.
