#24 UMW Baseball Tops Marymount, 12-7, in CAC Tourney 1st Round; Extends Win Streak to 13

The 24th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team overcame an early four-run deficit to defeat Marymount University, 12-7, in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 26-5, and extend their win streak to 13 games.

The Eagles fell behind, 4-0, as the Saints scored two runs in the first and two in the third. After a walk to Brian Burns, Justin Kime singled with two outs, and senior Jono Haught hit the first pitch over the right field fence for his 10th home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

UMW tied the score in the fourth, as James Sink and David Slupek singled, and were advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Thomas Weaver. Burns followed with a sacrifice fly to plate the tying run.

The Eagles busted ahead with five runs in the fifth. Kime singled with one out, and Haught reached on an error before Moynihan walked to load the bases. Slupek walked in a run, and Weaver followed with a bases-clearing double to up the Eagle lead to 8-4. Burns followed with another double to score Weaver.

UMW added a run in the sixth, as Sink plated Kime on a single. The Eagles scored twice in the seventh, Weaver doubled and scored on a Kyle Bynum single. James Keller followed with a single to score Bynum and up the lead to 12-4. The Saints scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth to close the final score to 12-7.

Weaver had two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBI for the Eagles, while Kime and Sink each singled twice. Haught's homer, his 10th of the season, drove home three runs.

Junior Bernie Mayflower gained the win in relief, allowing three hits and no runs in 2.1 innings, with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Eagles will face Salisbury University on Friday in Frostburg, Md., at 4:00 p.m.
