UMW Baseball Sweeps Wesley on Saturday; Runs Win Streak to 11

The University of Mary Washington won the opener, 15-5, and scored seven runs in the eight to take the nightcap, 10-8, to take a doubleheader from Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles run their win streak to 11 and clinch third place in the CAC Tournament.

The Eagles jumped ahead in the opener, scoring three runs in the first. James Keller walked and was advanced to second on a sacrifice. Jono Haught walked, and Mitch Moynihan and James Sink followed with RBI singles to give UMW a 2-0 lead. David Slupek hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0.

After Wesley cut the deficit to 3-2 with single runs in the second and third, Brian Burns hit a solo home run in the fourth, and Moynihan scored on a throwing error in the fifth. Wesley scored twice in the seventh to tie the score, but UMW scored seven runs in the seventh to break the game open.

Haught was hit by a pitch and Moynihan followed with a single. After a sacrifice, Slupek walked to load the bases. Thomas Weaver singled to knock in one run, and Kyle Bynum followed with a two-run single. Keller drove in Weaver with a single, and two runs scored on a throwing error. Haught ended the scoring with an RBI single.

The Eagles added three runs in the eighth, as Bynum hit a sacrifice fly and Keller and Kime added RBI singles. Wesley scored once in the ninth.

Keller, Moynihan, and Sink each had three hits for the Eagles, with Kime adding two. Junior Ryan Van Assche improved to 9-1 with the win, allowing seven hits in seven innings, with three earned runs and nine strikeouts.

In the second game, Wesley led, 7-0, in the seventh, before the Eagles scored three in the seventh and seven in the eighth for a 10-8 win. In the seventh, Kime doubled and scored on a Moynihan single. Sink reached on an error, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Slupek drove in both with a single.

In the eighth, Keller walked and advanced to third on wild pitches. Kime walked, and Haught singled to drive in Keller. Moynihan tripled in two runs, and scored on a Sink double. Slupek, Burns, and Keller each added RBI doubles.

Keller, Moynihan, and Slupek each had two hits for UMW. Erik Jorgenson pitched a no-hit seventh inning to gain the win, while Weaver gained the save with one strikeout.

Mary Washington will face Neumann College on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
