UMW Baseball Sweeps Monday Twinbill at Bridgewater to Improve to 21-5

Freshman Joe Thompson allowed three hits in seven innings in picking up the win ion the opener, and senior Jono Haught tied the school season home run record in the nightcap, as the University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a doubleheader at Bridgewater College, 3-0 and 15-4, on Monday.

Thompson allowed three hits and no runs in gaining his third win without a defeat in game one, which was scoreless into the eighth inning. Kyle Bynum led off being hit by a pitch, and moved to second on a single from James Keller. After Justin Kime reached on an error to load the bases, all three runners advanced on a wild pitch. Haught followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Eagles up, 2-0.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the ninth, as David Slupek doubled and Thomas Weaver singled. After a sacrifice put runners on second and third, Bynum provided a sacrifice fly for an insurance run.

Keller and David Slupek each had two hits for UMW. Junior Tyler Daig gained the save, allowing one hit in two innings with four strikeouts.

In game two, the Eagle offense erupted for 15 runs on 18 hits, led by Mitch Moynihan's four hits, and Haught and Slupek's three each.

UMW scored four runs in the second, three each in the fifth and sixth, and one in the seventh before notching four more in the ninth. Haught and Moynihan each drove in three runs for UMW, and Bynum doubled and tripled. James Sink and Weaver had two hits each as well.

Junior Bernie Mayflower gained the win on the mound, allowing one run on five hits in six innings, with three strikeouts.

Mary Washington will host St. Mary's College on Wednesday at 3:30 pm in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup.
