Thompson, Slupek Propel UMW Baseball Past CNU, 8-4, on Tuesday in CAC Matchup

Freshmen Joe Thompson and David Slupek led the University of Mary Washington baseball team to an 8-4 win over Christopher Newport University on Tuesday at Dickinson Stadium. Thompson hurled 6.2 innings in gaining the win, while Slupek had three hits.

The Eagles led throughout, scoring five first inning runs. James Keller and Justin Kime led off the game with singles, and advanced on a passed ball. Mitch Moynihan followed with a two-run double, and advanced to third on a James Sink single.

After Slupek was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Thomas Weaver walked to score one run, and Brian Burns followed with an RBI single to plate another. Kyle Bynum followed with a bases loaded walk to push the Eagle lead to 5-0.

The Captains scored once in the fifth, but UMW answered, as Moynihan singled, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, and scored on a Slupek single.

CNU added two runs in the seventh, but again UMW answered with two in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Moynihan walked, and advanced to second on a groundout. Slupek doubled to score Moynihan, and Slupek scored on a Weaver single.

Thompson allowed six hits and one walk in 6.2 innings, with four strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Junior Tyler Daig allowed one run in 2.1 innings on four hits with two strikeouts.

Slupek doubled twice, singled, and was hit by a pitch, while Moynihan singled and doubled, and Keller and Weaver each singled twice.

The Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they visit Southern Virginia University at 4:00 p.m.
