UMW Baseball Tops Va. Wesleyan, 10-4, on Monday; Haught Homers Again

The University of Mary Washington baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 10-4 victory at Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday in Virginia Beach. The Eagles improve to 13-4 on the season.

In the first, Jono Haught singled home Justin Kime for the game's first run. In the second, David Slupek singled to lead off and went to third on a double by Brian Burns. Kyle Bynum plated one run with a groundout, and James Sink followed with an RBI single.

In the third, James Keller scored on a wild pitch, and Burns walked with the bases loaded to move UMW's lead to 5-0. The Marlins responded with one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth, to move the score to 5-4.

The Eagles scored once in the seventh, as Mitch Moynihan doubled and scored on a single from Slupek. UMW rallied for four runs in the eighth, as Justin Kime provided an RBI single before Haught hit his seventh home run of the year, providing three runs to the cause.

Haught had two singles and a home run, plating four runs, while Moynihan added two singles and a double. Slupek and Kime each had two hits for the Eagles, who collected 13 hits and played errorless defense.

Gabe Tonga picked up the win for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on two hits, with six walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit St. Mary's College at 3:30 p.m. in Capital Athletic Conference play.
