Van Assche, Haught Lead UMW Baseball to Twinbill Sweep of Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday

Junior Ryan Van Assche pitched a perfect game into the eighth inning of the opener, and senior Jono Haught collected seven hits, including his sixth homer of the season, as the University of Mary Washington baseball team swept Penn State Harrisburg, 15-1 and 9-2, on Sunday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 12-4 on the year.

Van Assche was the story in game one, throwing 7.2 perfect innings before allowing his lone hit of the day. He struck out the next hitter, his 10th of the game without a walk. Offensively, the Eagles exploded for 15 runs on 19 hits.

The Eagles scored in the first, as Justin Kime reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a single from Haught. Mitch Moynihan plated Kime on a fielder's choice, and James Keller followed with a single. David Slupek drove home Moynihan with a single, and then Tyler Hoefflich plated two runs with a double.

UMW scored twice in the second, as Haught reached on a fielder's choice, and Moynihan singled. Keller plated both runners with a double. The Eagles added three in the fourth as Haught plated Brian Burns with a single, and Moynihan followed with a two-run homer.

The Eagles scored three in the fifth, as Kyle Bynum singled, Burns walked, and Kime singled to load the bases. Haught drove in two runs with a single to center, and Moynihan drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

The Eagles scored three in the eighth, as Keller and Slupek led off with back to back doubles, and Thomas Weaver followed with an RBI double. The third run scored on an error.

Haught and Slupek each had four hits for the Eagles, with Slupek posting two doubles. Keller had three hits, including two doubles, and Moynihan, Kime and Weaver added two hits apiece.

In the nightcap, the Eagles overcame a 2-0 deficit to win, 9-2. trailing 2-0 in the fourth, UMW tied the score as Haught led off with a home run, and Keller was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Slupek, and scored on a balk.

The Eagles scored three in the fifth, as Bynum walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, and to third on a sacrifice. Kime followed with a single to plate Bynum. Moynihan reached on an error, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Keller drove in both runs with a single.

UMW scored four in the seventh, as Kime and Haught singled and advanced on a wild pitch, and Moynihan followed with an RBI single. Keller then added an RBI double, and after a walk to Slupek, James Sink drove in a pair with a double.

Sophomore Nick McIntyre gained the win, allowing one earned run in 6.2 innings, on five hits, with three walks and six strikeouts. Tyler Daig and David Phillips added 2.1 innings of hitless relief.

Kime had four hits for the Eagles, while Haught added three hits, including the home run. Keller singled, doubled, and drove in three runs.

The Eagles will visit Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
