Eagles Baseball Drops Twinbill to #4 Salisbury on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a doubleheader to fourth-ranked Salisbury University, 8-2 and 10-9, on Sunday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles fall to 8-2 on the season.

In the opener, Salisbury scored once in the second, five times in the fourth, once in the sixth and once in the ninth for the 8-2 win. Eagle miscues hurt the cause, as just two of the Sea Gull runs were earned.

The Eagle offense was provided by senior Jono Haught, whose opposite field two-run homer in the ninth accounted for the Eagle runs. Sophomore Nick McIntyre took the loss, allowing eight hits in five innings, with six runs, one of which was earned. The Eagle bullpen limited the Gulls to one earned run in four innings on three hits.

David Slupek had a pair of hits for the Eagles.

In the nightcap, Salisbury jumped ahead with two runs in the first, but Haught doubled and scored on a mitch Moynihan homer to left to tie the score. Salisbury added single runs in the second and third to take a 4-2 lead, but the Eagles scored four in the fifth to take the lead at 6-4.

After a pair of walks and an infield single, UMW's Tyler Hoeflich singled home Justin Kime, and Thomas Weaver followed with a two-run single to plate Haught and James Keller. Brian Burns followed with an RBI single to plate Hoeflich.

Salisbury answered with three runs in the sixth to regain the lead at 7-6. The Eagles quickly tied the score in the bottom of the frame, as Haught hit his fifth homer of the year off the scoreboard in left field to knot the score at 7-7.

The Eagles took the lead in the eighth as Haught tripled and scored on a Moynihan single. Salisbury scored three times to take the lead in the ninth, and the Eagles rallied with a run in the ninth, but left the bases loaded.

Haught doubled, tripled, and homered and scored four times for UMW, while Moynihan and Weaver each had two hits and three RBI.

The Eagles will host Penn State-Altoona on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
