Haught's Homer Leads UMW Baseball to 9-4 Win Over Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday

Senior Jono Haught hit his third home run of the season in leading the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 9-4 win over Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Eagles improve to 6-0 on the season.

Mount Saint Mary jumped ahead with a run in the first and two in the second, but Haught tied the score in the third with a three-run homer.

The Eagles burst ahead with four in the fourth, as Mitch Moynihan led off with a double and scored on a James Sink sacrifice fly to open the scoring. James Keller singled and scored on a Tyler Hoeflich single, and Hoeflich scored on a Kyle Bynum RBI groundout. David Slupek was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the fourth run.

After the Knights scored once in the fifth, the Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Keller walked, moved to third on a single, and scored on a Brian Burns groundout. Bynum then drove home Hoeflich with the Eagles' ninth run.

Justin Kime led the Eagles with three hits, while Keller and Hoeflich each had two hits. Junior Andrew Slupek gained the win in relief, allowing one run on one hit in two innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. David Phillips, Paul McClure, Bernie Mayflower, and Thomas Weaver combined for 4.2 scoreless innings of relief.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday when they visit Shenandoah University at 3:30 pm.
