UMW Baseball Sweeps Eastern in Tuesday Twinbill in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a doubleheader from Eastern University on Tuesday in Myrtle Beach, S.C., winning 4-1 and 7-3 to improve to 5-0 on the season.

UMW picked up a 4-1 win in the opener, as sophomore Nick McIntyre hurled five innings of one-hit ball in picking up his second win, with four walks and two strikeouts.

UMW went ahead in the second when David Slupek doubled to lead off, and scored on a James Sink groundout. After Eastern tied the score in the third, Kyle Bynum walked and scored on a Jono Haught RBI single.

The Eagles scored again in the fourth on a pair of errors, and capped the scoring with a run in the sixth on another unearned run.

Haught led the Eagles with a pair of hits and an RBI.

In the nightcap, Eastern jumped ahead 3-0 after an inning and a half. UMW battled back in the second, as James Keller was hit by a pitch and scored on a Thomas Weaver RBI single. Weaver scored on a Mitch Moynihan sac fly.

The Eagles added a pair of runs in the third as Sink scored on a wild pitch and Moynihan passed on a passed ball. Haught followed with a two-run homer in the fourth, and the Eagles capped the scoring in the sixth as Haught singled and Slupek followed with an RBI double.

Freshman Joe Thompson picked up his first win, allowing two earned runs on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts in six innings.

Haught went 2-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI, and Sink had two hits to pace the offense.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they face Mt. St. Mary at 3:00 pm.
