Haught's Four Long Hits Lead UMW Baseball to 8-7 Win Over Muhlenberg in Myrtle Beach

Senior catcher Jono Haught hit two doubles, a triple, and a home run to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to an 8-7 win over Muhlenberg College on Monday night at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Eagles started with a bang, as Haught hit a two-run homer in the first, but the Mules came right back with three in the bottom of the frame. The Eagles tied the score in the third, as Haught doubled and scored on a James Keller single.

UMW broke ahead with a four-run fourth. Mitch Moynihan led off with a double, and after being advanced to third, scored on a Kyle Bynum single. Bynum then stole second and third, and scored on a Justin Kime single. Haught tripled and scored on a Keller single.

Muhlenberg trimmed the deficit to 7-4 in the fifth, due to three Eagle errors in the frame. The Mules cut the deficit to 7-5 in the seventh, and the Eagles scored a key unearned run in the top of the ninth before allowing two in the bottom of the inning for an 8-7 win.

Haught doubled twice, tripled, homered, scored three runs, and drove in three for UMW. Kime, Keller, and Moynihan each had two hits as well.

Junior Ryan Van Assche allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in gaining his second win of the season. Tyler Daig picked up the save, his first of the season, with 1.1 innings of work.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Tuesday when they face Eastern University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
