UMW Baseball Opens With Twinbill Sweep of Plattsburgh State, 11-2 and 16-1

The University of Mary Washington baseball team opened the 2015 season with an 11-2 and 16-1 doubleheader sweep of Plattsburgh State University on Saturday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles erupted for 25 on the day, with starting pitchers allowing just one hit combined.

In the opener, junior Ryan Van Assche allowed no hits in five innings, as the Eagles rapped out 12 hits in an 11-2 win. Senior catcher Jono Haught singled, tripled, and drove in four runs, while David Slupek and Mitch Moynihan each singled and tripled, and James Sink singled and doubled.

The Eagles scored two in the first, keyed by a double from James Keller, and added two in the second, three in the third, and four in the fifth to build an 11-0 lead. Kyle Bynum's RBI single and stolen base keyed the second, and Slupek's RBI triple propelled the three-run third. Haught's bases-clearing triple keyed the fifth. Van Assche, who had struck out five and walked three, gave way to reliever Paul McClure, who allowed one earned run in two innings.

In the nightcap, UMW scored three in the first and eight in the third to build an 11-0 lead, and added five in the sixth in a 16-1 win. Haught led all hitters with three hits, two runs scored, and three RBI, while Moynihan added two hits and three RBI.Slupek and Thomas Weaver each drove in a pair of runs.

The Eagles used a pair of leadoff walks and infield single in the first to load the bases with none out, and after a passed ball and sacrifice fly, Moynihan walked with the bases loaded to provide the third run of the frame.

Moynihan started the scoring in the third with an RBI single, and, after a wild pitch scored a run and a walk, Justin Kime drove in a run with a bases loaded hit by pitch. Haught followed with a two-run single, and after another wild pitch plated a run, a sacrifice fly from Slupek added another. Weaver capped the scoring with an RBI double. Sink and Moynihan provided RBI singles to key the five-run sixth.

Sophomore Nick McIntyre allowed just one hit in five innings on the mound, walking none and striking out five. Freshman Joe Thompson allowed one run on one hit with one strikeout in two innings of relief.

The Eagles' game on Sunday against Plattsburgh has been cancelled due to weather. UMW will return to action on Friday when they host Susquehanna University at 2:00 p.m.
