UMW Baseball Erupts for 20 Hits; Tops Southern Virginia, 15-5

Sophomore Derek Nease collected four hits, and freshman Burns homered and drove in four runs to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 15-5 win at Southern Virginia University on Wednesday in Buena Vista, Va. James Sink, Jono Haught, and James Keller each had three hits for the Eagles.

The Eagles jumped on the board early with three runs in the first and two in the second. The Knights countered with one in the first and four in the second, and the score stood tied at 5-5 until the seventh inning. UMW plated five runs in the seventh and five in the eight to break the game open for their 14th victory of the season.

Nease had four hits in six at bats, with two runs scored and an RBI. Sink went 3-6 with two runs scored and an RBI, Haught was 3-6 with two runs and two RBI, and Keller was 3-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Tyler Truslow and Connor Finnerty each had two hits.

Sophomore David Phillips pitched 5.2 innings of four-hit shutout relief to gain the win, walking none and striking out six.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they host Marymount University for a 1:00 doubleheader.
