The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a doubleheader from Rivier College on Monday, winning the opener in extra innings, 4-3, and taking the nightcap, 9-0. The Eagles improve to 11-2 on the season.
In the opener, the Eagles fell behind 3-0 afteran inning and a half, but scored three times in the second to tie the score. Nolan Gilbert, Kevin Stein, and Jono Haught provided RBI singles in the frame.
The game stayed at 3-3 through seven innings, and in the bottom of the eighth, Thomas Weaver doubled to lead off the inning, stole third, and scored on another Gilbert single. Weaver, Gilbert, and James Sink each had a pair of hits for the Eagles.
Freshman Erik Jorgenson gained the win in relief, pitching five innings of three-hit ball, with one walk and striking out six.
In the nightcap, the Eagle offense and pitching thrived. UMW scored four times in the third, three in the fourth, and two in the sixth. Jono Haught led the Eagles by going 3-4 at the plate with four RBI, including a double. James Keller went 2-4 with three RBI, and Conner Lilley added a pair of hits as well.
Sophomore Bernie Mayflower pitched 5.2 innings of two-hit shutout ball, walking three and striking out seven. David Phillips pitched 1.1 innings of perfect relief.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they host Frostburg State University at 3:00 p.m.
