The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to Montclair State University on Sunday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles, who rallied for two runs in the eighth, saw the game called with two out in the top of the ninth due to rain.

Montclair State started quickly with a run in the first on a double and single. The Red Hawks held that lead at 1-0 into the sixth, when they plated four runs on two hits and two walks.

UMW answered in the eighth, as the Eagles scored twice. Nolan Gilbert singled and scored on an RBI groundout from Brian Burns. With two out, Tyler Truslow singled and scored on a double by Jono Haught.

After two walks and a wild pitch in the ninth, the game, which was being played in a steady downpour, was called.

Truslow, Gilbert, and Conner Lilley each had two hits for the Eagles, with Haught adding a double. Sophomore Tyler Daig pitched 3.1 innings of relief, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts, walking two in the ninth. Sophomore Bernie Mayflower absorbed the loss, allowing five runs in 5.1 innings, on on nine hits. Mayflower struck out six.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host CAC foe Christopher Newport University at 3:00 p.m.
