UMW Baseball Sweeps Eastern in Saturday Doubleheader

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a Saturday doubleheader from Eastern University, winning the opener, 12-7, and taking the night cap, 8-0. The Eagles, winners of six straight, are 6-1 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles scored twice in the first as Brian Burns singled, stole second, and scored on a James Keller double, along with Jono Haught. Eastern scored three times in the second, once in the third, and three times in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead, but the Eagles responded with seven runs in the fifth. Conner Lilley and Brian Burns provided RBI singles, and James Sink had a two-run single to pace the rally.

The Eagles added three in the eighth as two runs scored on a wild pitch, and Lilley added an RBI single.

Sink went 3-5 with a run and two RBI, Lilley went 2-3 with a run and two RBI, Bryant went 2-4 with a run and RBI, and Burns went 2-3 with a walk, run, and RBI. Freshman Erik Jorgensen gained the win with 1.2 innings with one earned run, two hits, and three strikeouts. David Phillips earned the save with four innings of two-hit relief.

In the nightcap, UMW scored five times in the fifth, once in the seventh, and twice in the eighth. Keller had three hits in five at bats with two runs and an RBI, Sink went 2-5 with four RBI, and Bryant, Weaver, and Lilley each had two hits.

Cole Jarvis gained the win for the Eagles, allowing four hits in seven shutout innings, walking one and striking out five. Andrew Slupek allowed one hit in two innings of relief.

UMW will host Montclair State University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
