Straub, Lilley Lead UMW Baseball to 1-0 Win Over Wesley in Series Opener

Senior pitcher Mike Straub pitched a complete game three-hit shutout, and freshman Connor Lilley added a pair of hits including the game winner in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 1-0 win over Wesley College in the series opener on Friday at Dickinson Stadium. With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-1 in league play, and 15-9 overall.

In a game that proved to be a classic pitchers' duel between Straub and Wesley's Eric Willey, Wesley had just three hits and UMW eight. But the Eagles used a two-hit, two walk rally in the ninth for the win.

Both teams had several scoring chances, as Wesley left runners in scoring position in the third, sixth, and ninth innings, including Straub pitching out of a second and third, one-out spot in the third. The Eagles stranded four runners before the ninth, stranded runners in scoring position in the third, sixth, and seventh.

But UMW got a leadoff walk from Cam Kostyack to lead off the ninth, and after a sacrifice bunt, James Sink reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners with one down. Alex Bryant was walked intentionally to load the bases, and after a flyout, Lilley connected for the game winner with two outs.

Lilley singled twice for UMW, while Seth Jordan and Jono Haught doubld for the Eagles. Straub allowed three singles, a walk, and hit two batters in the complete game shutout, with five strikeouts. Willey allowed eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts for Wesley.

The Eagles and Wolverines will conclude their three-game set with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
