Mancari's 15 Ks Lead UMW Baseball to Sweep of Gallaudet

Junior left hander Torey Mancari struck out 15 batters in seven innings in the opener, and junior Mike Straub allowed two hits in 5.2 innings in the finale as the University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a doubleheader from Gallaudet University on Sunday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles won the opener, 9-1, and took the second game, 4-0.

In the first game, which was scoreless into the third inning, UMW broke ahead with three runs in the third. With one out, Collin Finnerty and Jono Haught hit back-to-back doubles. Shane Sixsmith singled ahead of a Connor Wells double, and Ben Sisk followed with a sacrifice fly.

The Eagles tacked on two runs in the fifth, as Sixsmith walked, Wells singled, and both scored when Brent Steffey singled and the errant throw plated Wells. UMW scored four times in the sixth, with Santino Rosanova doubling, Sixsmith providing a two-run single, and Sisk adding another RBI with a hit.

Mancari allowed two hits and one earned run in seven innings, walking one and striking out a career-high 15, just two off the single game school record.

Game two saw UMW score twice in the first as Sixsmith walked and Wells was hit by a pitch, and later scored on a sac fly by Seth Jordan and a single by Rosanova. UMW scored in the third as Sisk reached on an error and scored on Jordan's double. The Eagles capped the scoring in the sixth when Haught doubled and scored on a Wells single.

Straub gave up two hits and no runs in 5.2 innings, with four walks and three strikeouts. Zach Hendrix allowed one hit in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Eagles will visit Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
