UMW Baseball Falls to Salisbury, 7-4

The University of Mary Washington battled back from a 2-0 first inning deficit to take a 3-2 lead, but fell, 7-4, on Sunday to Salisbury in Capital Athletic Conference action at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles fall to 5-9-1 overall, and 2-6 in CAC play.

After Salisbury jumped on the Eagles for two first inning scores, UMW answered with three in the fourth to take the lead. Brent Steffey led off with a single, and after a Seth Jordan double, scored on a Santino Rosanova sacrifice fly.  Jordan moved to third, but was thrown out on a fielder's choice by Connor Finnerty. Finnerty scored on a Kevin Yarnell double, and Yarnell scored on a Jono Haught double.

The Sea Gulls plated single runs in the fifth and sixth to regain the lead, but UMW scored in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at four. Salisbury added one in the seventh and two in the eighth for the 7-4 win.

Steffey went 3-5 with three singles, while Jordan and Yarnell singled and doubled for the Eagles. Junior Mike Straub took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in seven-plus innings, with four walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will host Frostburg State University on Tuesday at 3:00 in another CAC contest.
