UMW Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader with Frostburg

The University of Mary Washington baseball team won the opener of its Sunday doubleheader with Frostburg State University, 2-1, before falling to the Bobcats, 6-3, in the nightcap in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference openers on Sunday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles move to 4-4-1 overall, and 1-1 inleague play.

In game one, the Bobcats jumped ahead with a run in the fourth, but UMW answered with one in the bottom of the inning, as Seth Jordan and Santino Rosanova led off the inning with singles, were bunted ahead by right fielder Kevin Yarnell, and Jordan scored on a sacrifice fly by Brendan Jones. Neither team could score again until the bottom of the seventh, when the Eagles rallied for the win with two outs. Freshman Connor Wells singled, moved to second on a walk to Ben Sisk, and scored on the game-winning single to center from shortstop Brent Steffey.

Junior Torey Mancari earned the win for the Eagles, allowing one earned run in seven innings on just four hits, with five walks and eight strikeouts. Wells and Sisk led UMW at the plate with two hits each.

In game two, Frostburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to see the Eagles tie the score in the bottom of the third. FSU scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings, and UMW could only cut the deficit to 6-3 with one in the sixth. Wells led the way again with two of the Eagles' seven hits.

Mary Washington will return to action on March 10 when they visit Stevenson University for a noon doubleheader.
