UMW Baseball Sweeps Sunday Pair from Albright

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a doubleheader from Albright College on Sunday at Dickinson Stadium, 3-0 and 9-3, to improve to 3-3-1 on the season.

In the opener, junior Mike Straub pitched six innings of two-hit ball, walking two and striking out eight batters. Sophomore Jake Black picked up the save, retiring three straight batters after entering the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh.

The Eagles scored once in the third when Shane Sixsmith reached on an error and scored on a single after stealing second base. The Eagles produced four straight hits in scoring twice in the fifth inning to add two insurance runs.

Offensively, the Eagles were led by junior DH Seth Jordan, who had two hits in three at bats. Freshman Connor Wells went 1-1 with an RBI and run scored after entering the game after starting leftfielder Connor Finnerty was injured sliding into second base.

In game two, the Eagles' pitching was again impressive, as senior Matt Abramson struck out eight in six innings with two walks and two hits allowed. But the Eagles found a groove at the plate as well, scoring nine runs on 15 hits. Jordaqn went 3-4 with four RBI to pace the attack, while senior shortstop Brent Steffey went 4-4 with three runs scored. Sophomore Kevin Yarnell went 3-3 with a walk as well, and Wells added two hits.

Mary Washington will return to action next Saturday, March 3, when they host Frostburg State University in a noon CAC doubleheader.
